As inevitable as conflict in a Dickens novel, information technology (IT) pundits consistently predict that artificial intelligence (AI) will create either the best of times or the worst of apocalypses. On one side spring assurances of a paradise where AI relieves us of all burdens and promises eternal riches, health, and console games. The other side warns of a winter of despair, populated with sentient robots stamping out the final embers of humanity.
