In a 2012 survey conducted by the Center for Talent Management (now Coqual), 268 senior executives indicated that “executive presence” counts for 26% of the attributes necessary for promotion.1 So what is executive presence? Generally, it is the ability of a leader to inspire confidence and the feeling in others that she is capable, reliable, and the “right” person to be in charge. Most people recognize executive presence when they see it, but there are many ways to define it.
