Early Career Professionals—How to Distinguish Yourself as a Subject Matter Expert Early in Your Career

As you venture off into the legal world as a newly minted attorney, you will often hear sentiments like: “You have to earn your stripes.” “The law is playing the long game.” “You have to do the grunt work.” “Being a good attorney doesn’t happen overnight.” Now while these sentiments do hold some truth, they are not absolutes. The counterpoint I would make to the idea that you must have a long career or many years of experience to be an effective attorney is that the law and its network of professionals welcomes you as an equal on day one. You don’t have to be a veteran in the law in order to immerse yourself in an area of interest and distinguish yourself as a subject matter expert early in your career.
