First Reflections—Find and Become a Trusted Advisor

I regularly discuss with colleagues how to become a “trusted advisor” to clients. Our clients hire a variety of attorneys and health law professionals for specific projects involving different substantive issues, but as outside counsel we recognize the satisfaction that comes from clients who seek out ongoing, broad-ranging arrangements with seasoned, trusted advisors for long-term, mutually beneficial relationships. Recently, while reflecting on the importance of mentoring as a way of giving back to the profession, I recognized that a mentor is aptly described by this same designation: an experienced, trusted advisor or counselor over a period of time.
