U.S. Court in Illinois Greenlights “Wire Tap Act” Claim Against Hospital for Alleged Meta Disclosures

A plaintiff can move forward with her putative class action claim that the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) unlawfully disclosed patients’ sensitive health information for advertising purposes without their consent to Meta Platforms Inc. in violation of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) through online tracking technology embedded in the hospital’s website and patient portal, a federal district court in Illinois held April 30.
