Research Hospital Agrees to Pay Nearly $20 Million to Resolve Liability for Self-Disclosed Improper Billing

  • January 12, 2024

H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute Hospital Inc., a nonprofit cancer treatment and research facility, agreed to pay $19,564,743 to resolve liability under the False Claims Act for improper claims submitted to federal health care programs for certain patient care items and services provided during research studies that were not eligible for reimbursement, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced January 4.

According to a press release, Moffitt billed federal health care programs for items and services provided as part of clinical trial research that should have been billed to non-government trial sponsors. After learning of the issues, Moffitt initiated an independent investigation and voluntarily provided the government with a written disclosure of its findings.

“Moffitt cooperated fully with the government’s investigation of the conduct and implemented prompt and substantial remedial measures,” DOJ said.

The claims resolved by the settlement are allegations only and there has been no determination of liability.
