In recognition that one in five Americans call a rural community “home,” CMS adopted a new Medicare provider type for a Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) effective January 1, 2023. REH status gives rural hospitals an option to continue treating patients without having to staff and maintain inpatient services, allowing them to focus on emergency care and outpatient services.
