On May 6, 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released its final rule governing the implementation of Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, which is the nation’s first civil rights law for health care. The rule has evolved since initially being published as a final rule in 2016, and then being republished in 2020, but the 2024 version is the most comprehensive. Parts of the rule become effective on July 5, 2024, with additional deadlines for affirmative actions by the covered entities affected forthcoming this fall and next year.
