Burnout vs. Compliance: How to Be Part of the Solution

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently updated its Physician Well-Being Program in response to a reported increase in practitioner burnout. Given the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 63% rate of self-reported burnout experienced among surveyed physicians may not surprise our readers. But the AMA does not lay blame on disease states alone. Rather than citing the compliance problems that arise from an exhausted workforce, the Physician Well-Being Program implies a causal route—compliance is part of the problem. Administrative system inefficiencies and recordkeeping burdens, combined with general misunderstandings about regulatory requirements, cause practitioners to expend unnecessary energy on non-clinical matters, the AMA suggests.
