AHLA is pleased to announce that Asha B. Scielzo will be taking over as its new board president on July 1, 2024. Scielzo will play a key role in guiding the Association’s strategic efforts and will provide invaluable leadership and support for the Association in the years to come. Scielzo joined the AHLA Board of Directors in 2016 and currently serves as the chair of the Education Board Committee. She served as chair for four years (2013-2017) on the Fundamentals of Health Law program planning committee and served as a member of that committee from 2009 to 2013. Scielzo also previously served as co-chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Council, from 2016 to 2018. She is a dynamic and engaged leader, deeply committed to the Association and the health law community.
"I am thrilled that Asha will continue to share her leadership expertise in this new role, which will only further accentuate the tremendous work she has done for the Association," said Cynthia Y. Reisz, President of AHLA and member of Bass Berry & Sims in Nashville, TN. "Asha is a strong advocate for AHLA’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives and will be a champion for AHLA as we continue our efforts around these important initiatives. Asha has demonstrated a life-long commitment to education, which puts her in a strong position to support AHLA's mission as its new board president."
Scielzo is the Director of the nationally ranked Health Law & Policy Program at the American University Washington College of Law and she has assisted several law schools with the development of specialized health law curricula for their JD, LLM and Master of Law programs. She frequently speaks and publishes on key health law topics and is deeply committed to mentoring law students and early career professionals.
David S. Cade, Executive Vice President, and Chief Executive Officer of AHLA, added, "With her prior experience in the practice of law, and her passion for and commitment to innovating health law education, Asha is the right choice to make a significant contribution to AHLA and its members. She is committed to IDEA and prioritizes collaboration, respectful dialogue and exchange of ideas, and consensus building, all of which are essential values to the AHLA mission."
Scielzo received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Pennsylvania and later obtained a Juris Doctorate, cum laude, at the Georgetown University Law Center. She serves as a Board Member and Chair of the Health Law Section of the South Asian Bar Association of Washington, D.C., and as a Board Member and speaker with the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics.
