Testing Older Physician Acuity: Indicated or Contraindicated?

Much academic and legal thought has been put into determining whether medical organizations can and should test the mental and physical acuity of physicians (and particularly surgeons) beyond a certain age. Well-respected names in academia and medicine, such as Yale and Stanford, are associated with programs presently in place and, in the case of Yale, they are defending the program in litigation. But is a testing program right for an organization and does it even feel the need to implement one?
