As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in research continues to grow, academic medical centers (AMCs) will need to be aware of the regulatory, legal, and ethical considerations surrounding its use. The involvement of AI in research can take various forms. AI either can be the subject of the research, where the purpose of the study is to validate the algorithm supporting the AI tool, or, alternatively, AI can play a supporting role, such as AI tools used in clinical research for drug development. The role of the AMC itself also may vary—ranging from research study sponsor, research study site, research services provider, to collaborator. Part of the complexity of attempting to perform research using AI is that legal and regulatory schemes are struggling to keep pace with technological innovation.
