Proposed Changes to ACGME Requirements Could Mean Big Changes to GME Sponsoring Institutions and Their Clinical Partners

At the end of August 2024, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the organization responsible for the accreditation of institutions that sponsor graduate medical education (GME) programs (residency and fellowships) and for the accreditation of those GME programs in the United States, released its long-awaited proposed major revision to its Institutional Requirements (the Institutional Requirements or Requirements). The Institutional Requirements govern the accreditation of over 900 teaching hospitals, medical schools, community hospitals, and additional organizations that sponsor GME programs (Sponsoring Institutions).
