Descriptions of Leadership Roles

General Responsibilities – AHLA Board of Directors and Nominating Committee 

AHLA’s Board of Directors serves as the governing body responsible for setting the strategic direction, ensuring fiduciary responsibility, and representing the interests of the Association’s membership. The Board is comprised of 23 members and meets twice a year in person, and several times virtually. Board members also serve on the following Committees: Education, Finance, Membership-IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility), and Nominating. 

The Nominating Committee is responsible for identifying and recommending candidates for AHLA’s Board and those nominated for Fellows designation. The Committee is comprised of past, current, and future AHLA Presidents, a Member-at-Large from the current Board, and a Member-at-Large from the general membership.  

 

General Responsibilities* – Council, Editorial Board, Practice Group, Program Planning Committee, and Review Board Leaders 

Leaders who support AHLA’s Councils, Editorial Board, Practice Groups, Program Planning Committees, and the Review Board ensure the group’s tasks and goals align with the Association’s Strategic Plan and work in partnership with assigned staff liaisons to plan and execute various projects, initiatives, and activities throughout the program year.  

Chairs, Vice Chairs, and Members (at-Large) all share the following responsibilities*:  

  • Participate in (i) leadership orientation and training activities; (ii) leader planning and/or group calls; (iii) AHLA Annual Meeting and/or Program aligned with your leadership group (e.g.,Tax and Finance PG leaders register and attend Tax Program; In-House Counsel Program Planning Committee attend In-House Counsel Program, etc.), and (iv) virtual networking events hosted by the leadership group. 

  • Identify and develop topics for educational offerings and resources in collaboration with other leaders and AHLA staff. 

  • Identify new talent. Build and leverage a diverse volunteer pipeline. 

  • Encourage broad participation among the membership and invite health law colleagues who do not yet belong to AHLA to get involved. 

  • Use AHLA communities to post questions, share information, and promote activities, events, programs, and resources to engage the membership. 

  • Enroll in the Mentoring Program and/or join and participate in the Mentoring Community in the Health Law Network. 

  • Support AHLA and donate annually to the Leadership Challenge. 

*if applicable: some of these activities may not be applicable to each position or leadership group
