David J. Greenburg Founders Award
Congratulations to the recipient of the 2024 David J. Greenburg Founders Award:
Dennis M. Barry, Retired Partner, King & Spalding, LLP
Dennis obtained a Bachelor of Arts, Phi Beta Kappa from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia. He became an AHLA member in 1983, subsequently serving as a speaker, author, mentor, and leader. A leading expert in Medicare reimbursement law, Dennis spoke at AHLA’s Institute on Medicare and Medicaid Payment Issues for over 30 years. He also spent many years serving as Program Chair of the event. Dennis was an active member of AHLA’s Board of Directors, where he served on the Quality Council and Professional Resources Committee. During his time on the Professional Resources Committee, he worked with staff to help create the Association’s Health Law Archive, a database of health law knowledge, with more than 30,000 documents from AHLA. Dennis is a highly regarded speaker and writer and served as a mentor to many members throughout his time with AHLA. In 2015, he was named an AHLA Fellow.
As a partner in King & Spalding’s Healthcare Practice Group, Dennis’ principal area of practice was in the health industry, and focused on health care clients, with an emphasis on Medicare coverage, payment, and compliance issues. He represented providers in numerous cases before the Provider Reimbursement Review Board, Administrative Law Judges and the federal courts. He also advised clients on specific compliance questions and worked with providers in establishing compliance programs. He was involved in defending a number of cases arising under the False Claims Act.
Dennis was recognized as an authority on Medicare issues and has attained many noteworthy accolades, including being selected as “Lawyer of the Year,” for Health Law in Washington, D.C., designated by The Best Lawyers in America and repeated inclusion in Best Lawyers in America in health care law.
