Strategic Plan Frequently Asked Questions

Why Was the Plan Developed?

AHLA is at a crossroads and our future relevance is on the line. We have a formidable reputation among health law professionals who want to see the organization grow and thrive. To solidify our relevance and expand our reach, now is the time to adopt meaningful change.

How Was the Plan Developed?

A diverse working group of staff and board members assembled to develop the plan. It began by creating our Case for Change, followed by a Future State, which focused on community and education to anchor our Strategic Plan. Eight primary elements are at the foundation of our Strategic Plan—mission, vision goals, strategies, and enabling values—all of which were developed collaboratively by the working group, with input and approval from the AHLA Board of Directors.

When Was the Plan Developed?

The planning process spanned 18 months. A three-month Assessment Phase started in January of 2022, during which the organization and our market were evaluated with stakeholder input. The Envision Phase followed, May through August of 2022, during which the working group imagined the future of AHLA and its impact. The Planning Phase, September of 2022 through January of 2023, focused on developing organizational strategies and metrics. The Preparation Phase was the last stage in our process, January through June of 2023, during which the organization has aligned to activate the new strategy. Now that our plan has been complete, the work of implementation begins!

Who Participated in Developing the Plan?

A combination of board members and senior staff created the plan and shared it with the AHLA Board of Directors who then approved it.

How Will this Plan be Used?

We will implement the plan to grow a diverse and inclusive audience of health law professionals who will make AHLA a professional home. We will streamline and target our educational offerings to meet the needs of stakeholders and evolve to solidify our long-term relevance and sustainability.
