Early Career Professionals—So, You Want to be a Health Care Attorney? A Primer on Health Law Practice Areas

Despite its ubiquitous name, health care law is comprised of many concentrations, each of which calls for a unique set of skills and interests, and none of which are fulsomely covered in introductory health law classes. At times, it can feel like there is no limit to the number of topics and areas that it covers. So, what does it really mean to practice health care law? As a junior attorney navigating a health law practice, I have conducted contract review and due diligence related to acquisitions, appealed denials of Medicare payments to the Medicare Appeals Council, represented hospital peer review boards in medical staff hearings, and defended clients involved in False Claims Act and Anti-Kickback Statute investigations. While I was introduced to these issues in law school, I often found myself overwhelmed by the sheer breadth of issues health care attorneys tackle.
