Physician Office Laboratories (POLs), or laboratories maintained by a physician or group of physicians for performing tests in connection with the physician(s) practice,1 are prevalent in the United States. It is estimated that POLs perform up to 11% percent of all non-hospital laboratory tests in the United States.2 Common laboratory tests that are performed in a POL include urinalysis, pregnancy, blood occult, blood count, strep, and cholesterol tests. In larger specialty practices, more advanced testing such as bone marrow biopsy may be performed.
