HHS Invests $1.4 Billion in ‘Project NextGen’ for COVID-19 Vaccine, Treatment Development

  • August 25, 2023

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded more than $1.4 billion to support the development of new COVID-19 vaccines and treatments through the administration’s “Project NextGen,” the agency announced August 22.

Project Next Gen is a $5 billion initiative led by the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority in partnership with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The funding includes $1 billion for vaccine clinical trials, $326 million for a new monoclonal antibody, and $100 million to explore novel vaccine and therapeutic technologies, the agencies said.

“Project NextGen is a key part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to keeping people safe from COVID-19 variants,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “These awards are a catalyst for the program—kickstarting efforts to more quickly develop vaccines and continue to ensure availability of effective treatments.”
