Medical Center Settles Potential HIPAA Violations over PHI Disclosures to Reporter

St. Joseph’s Medical Center agreed to pay $80,000 to the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) to settle potential violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy rule involving its disclosure of COVID-19 patients’ protected health information (PHI) to a national media outlet, the agency announced November 20.
