What Happens When a “Complaint Survey” Isn’t Really a “Survey”

All Medicare- and Medicaid-certified skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and nursing facilities (NFs) must be surveyed annually and not more than every 15 months. In addition, SNFs and NFs may be certified on an ad hoc basis, such as when there has been a change in ownership or when there is reason to believe that the SNF or NF may not be in compliance with applicable conditions of participation. The purpose of these surveys is to determine whether the facility is in compliance with the conditions of participation.
