More than 46 million Americans currently live in rural areas. A variety of data from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that rural areas have worse health outcomes than non-rural areas from several leading causes, including heart disease, cancer, unintentional injury, chronic respiratory disease and stroke. Improvements to these outcomes are hampered by the complicated financing and regulatory concerns of rural health care providers, including, in particular, of the hospitals that serve rural communities.
