HIPAA Security Rule Proposed Updates: Addressing Increasing Cyberthreats in Health Care

On January 6, 2025, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking titled “HIPAA Security Rule to Strengthen the Cybersecurity of Electronic Protected Health Information” (Proposed Rule). The purpose of the Proposed Rule is to bolster the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Security Rule by increasing cybersecurity measures to “better protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information” (ePHI) obtained or maintained by covered entities and business associates (regulated entities).
