U.S. Court in Maryland Finds Hospital That Refused Gender-Affirming Care Violated Section 1557

St. Joseph Medical Center, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Maryland Medical System Corporation (UMMS), discriminated against a transgender man “on the basis of sex” in violation of Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by refusing to allow his doctor to perform a hysterectomy at the hospital to treat his gender dysphoria, a federal court in Maryland held January 6.
