U.S. Court in Washington Rejects ERISA Claims Against Providence Health Plan over Wilderness Therapy, Residential Treatment Coverage Denials

The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington granted January 23 summary judgment to defendants Providence Health Plan (PHP) and Swedish Health Services Employee Benefits Plan (Plan) on claims under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) that they improperly denied coverage of a minor’s stays at an outdoor “wilderness program” in Hawaii and a residential facility in Utah.
